Paul Kohlmann was born on March 20, 1766 in Alsace, France. He had already been ordained to the priesthood when he entered the Society of Jesus on July 12, 1814. His younger brother Anthony had preceded him into the Society and became superior of the American mission in 1817 and tenth president of Georgetown College in 1820.
